How The Mind Works

  • 7 Rules – Behaviours – Reactions

The Conscious Mind starts this flow when it encounters an experience that seems to have an adverse effect on its self, is not understood but needs some form of immediate response. The Conscious Mind then creates a Rule which it hands to the Subconscious Mind for storage and implementation. The implementation involves creating a set of Learned Behaviours to make sure the Rule is obeyed. Any experience that is sent to the Subconscious is checked against the Rule and if it fails, an instruction is sent to the Conscious to React.

A negative experience is used to create the Rule. A set of Behaviours is developed in support of the Rule. If the Rule is questioned or challenged a Reaction is initiated.

An example can help. A young child needs attention and affection. The parents regularly reject or ignore these requests which gives rise to the negative experience. The child creates a Rule “People should pay attention to me”. The child then builds a set of Behaviours to support the Rule. If I do this they will notice – not working – maybe if I do that – no, not working – maybe if I do something else ………

The Learned Behaviour here is doing an activity for a short period, abruptly stopping it and moving to another activity, then stopping and moving to something else. As the Learned Behaviour becomes more entrenched the attention seeking Rule may not always be involved. The last little piece is Reactions. Tell the child to sit down, stay still and be quiet. All three of these conflict with the Rule. Prepare for a Reaction.

Negative experience – Rule creation – Entrenched Learned Behaviour – Reaction.
