How The Mind Works

  • 3 Understanding the Conscious Mind and Its Functions

The Conscious Mind collects information from the brain via its sensory inputs – hearing sight etc. and puts it in its short term memory for processing. If the information is understood e.g. ‘The sun is shining and it feels nice”, the Conscious Mind processes and formats the information and sends it to the Superconscious Mind. If the information is not fully understood e.g. ‘The boss just yelled at me”, the Conscious Mind sends the unprocessed information to the Subconscious Mind. The Conscious Mind also accepts reactions from the Subconscious Mind e.g. “yell back at the boss”.

The Conscious Minds’ memory is short term memory and has the fastest retrieval time. It is also volatile, meaning when you go to sleep, even a micro sleep of 1 or 2 seconds, the information in the short term memory is lost. Sleep is the Conscious Mind switching off. As a note, the Subconscious Mind and the Superconscious Mind are still running during sleep. You could give them a problem to work on just before you go to sleep.
